Critical Accountability Factor V: Parent/Community Involvement

Quality Indicator 5: The institution prepares teacher candidates to interact with and involve parents and community representatives to support teaching and learning.

A. Is there a clearly articulated plan for teaching the candidates how to effectively interact with and involve parents and community representatives to support student learning?

The Department of Education encourages pre-service teachers in all clinical settings, including student teaching, to take on the full role of professional teachers by participating in activities that bring them into direct and regular contact with parents. Preparation for these activities occurs in the methods courses. In ED3110 students learn about the role of parents in the evaluation of exception children, particularly in the development of IEPs (week 5). Students in ED/HU4140 learn about discourse communities and communication with different “position-holders.” They practice the appropriate manner for conducting parent/teacher conferences, writing letter, and communicating with the public. Students in ED/SS4020 have an extended class session focused on “public relations,” which emphasizes how pre-service teachers should plan their interactions with parents.

B. How and when do candidates interact with parents in a clinical/school setting? How is the candidate’s learning in parent/community involvement assessed?

In all clinical settings, students are encouraged to develop positive interactions with parents in order to facilitate student learning. This takes primarily during student teaching. The Department, through individual interactions with students and in the Student Teaching Handbook, urges teacher candidates to become fully involved in all school activities. They are required to attend parent teacher conferences. Because they typically take complete charge of their classrooms well before the halfway point of student teaching, they become the principal point of contact with parents. They are also encouraged to be involved in extracurricular activities, in which setting they typically encounter even greater interaction with parents, particularly at the high school level. Student teachers discuss these interactions during the seminars held with the supervisors several times during the student teaching experience. Student teachers are assessed, in part, on their ability to develop positive working relationships with parents (see student teaching evaluation forms).
