Quality Indicator 6: The institution prepare teacher
candidates to use technology to support teaching and learning.
A | B | C
A. How
does the college/university ensure that teacher candidates are provided
the opportunity to receive basic computer training or can demonstrate
basic computer literacy according to Standard #7, ELSMT?
-
Major Department. Teacher candidates
receive their degrees from other departments on campus. Each department
offers basic computer/technology
laboratories with a wide range of hardware and software, including
access to the web through Netscape and Explorer, and to MS Office,
including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Some individual departments
provide discipline-specific
software, as well, for statistical analysis, mathematics, web design
and graphics, and GIS. Instructors in all departments expect that
students
will use these productivity programs to develop and complete assignments.
Many courses utilize WebCT for assignment submission. All students
majoring
in Physics or Biological Sciences must complete a computer course
(for Physics – CS1010
Introduction to Programming;
for Biology – CS1121,
Introduction to Computer Science or BA1200,
Fundamentals of Information Systems.
-
Education Department. All teacher
candidates are subsequently required to complete ED3100 Instructional
Technology as a part of their preparation course sequence. This course
requires students
to complete a technology portfolio to document past and present technology
accomplishments as well as plan for future technology learning experiences
in order to meet or exceed ISTE NETS technology standards. The methods
courses provide students the opportunity to practice implementing
technology to enhance learning and to incorporate technology into
lesson planning.
In ED/HU4140,
for example, students analyze and critique online instructional resources.
Their online units are
evaluated using the concepts of user testing and instructional potential.
Students in ED/SS4020, ED4710,
and ED4740,
develop a lesson using instructional technology. Student teachers
are evaluated on the basis of the Entry-Level Standards, including
the
7th standard.

B.
Describe the strategies used to ensure that teacher candidates are
provided the opportunity to learn how technology can be used as a resource
for teaching and learning.
-
Course Requirement. All teacher candidates are required to complete
ED3100 Technology
in Education as a part of their preparation course sequence.
-

ability to use technology as a resource for teaching and learning is assessed
prior to recommendation for certification. What support is provided to candidates
who fail to meet the standards?
-
Prior to Student Teaching. Students
must successfully complete the ED3100 Instructional
Technology course. This course includes documentation of past, current,
and future technology accomplishments in
the form of a portfolio. All documentation is specific to ISTE NETS.
-
-
Prior to Certification by University. The students’ final
portfolio is presented
for evaluation
prior to recommendation for certification. One section of the portfolio
is devoted to documenting technology competence with respect to ISTE
NETS standards and in describing future professional development steps
that will
be taken to remedy any perceived deficiencies. Students who do not
demonstrate technology competence will be given assistance and support
to remove any
deficiencies.
Portfolio examples are available upon request.
