Survey Data

The Department of Education surveys program completers at the end of each semester. Our purpose is to gauge the response of students to individual courses in the program, as well as to understand their overall evaluation of the secondary teacher education program. Department faculty review these results to identify areas of concern within the program and use that information to modify and adjust the curriculum. The surveys from the 2002-03 academic year were very important in guiding our modifications in the curriculum during this past year. In particular, we identified a need to give more attention to assessment issues and increase our emphasis on national and state standards, including the Michigan Curriculum Framework. Survey data helped persuade adjunct faculty in the degree granting departments to support the increase in credits in the program and assured approval by the college council.

In March, 2004, we surveyed current and recent cooperating teachers, asking their opinions of Michigan Tech students who have served as student teachers in their schools. We also surveyed principals and superintendents to determine their assessment of Michigan Tech graduates who have been hired in their schools. We intend to use the results of these instruments to further refine and adjust our curriculum and the specific content of courses, as needed.
