Brad BaltenspergerWELCOME

Welcome to the MTU Periodic Review/Program Evaluation Unit Review Website.

Michigan Technological University is known for its expertise in science and engineering, but it takes its role as a technological university seriously. The Department of Education has been certifying secondary teachers for over 30 years. For many years certification programs were offered only in mathematics and the sciences, but academic units now also prepare students for 7-12 certification in social studies, English, business administration, economics, and technology & design.

The Education Department is a small academic unit within the College of Sciences and Arts. Its faculty members all hold Ph.D. degrees and are actively engaged in research, scholarship, and teaching. We employ several individuals, active or retired secondary school teachers, as student teaching supervisors. This small department is a cohesive unit in which faculty and staff interact informally on a daily basis to address curricular and pedagogical issues and to resolve problems of our students.

Because the population of the immediate region is small, the department is embedded in the community, and interacts closely and frequently with local school personnel. We work jointly with the Copper Country Intermediate School District and the Western Upper Peninsula Center for Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Education on teacher professional development programs. We communicate regularly with area principals and superintendents, as well as teachers. We pride ourselves on our linkages with the education establishment and with faculty and administrators in the degree-granting departments. We believe that our connectivity improves the quality of our programs, the academic and pedagogic skills of our graduates, and our ability to place students effectively in clinical and internship settings.

This web site for the Periodic Review/Program Evaluation is organized around the Standards Matrix and Critical Accountability Factors. Additional data and documents are provided on the website. Syllabi for all required courses in the teacher preparation program are also posted. The website is best accessed through Internet Explorer due to some DOC-to-HTML conversions.
