Descriptive Title: "Wolf Communication: Evaluating Jack London's Accuracy"
Overview:
Students will use factual information to evaluate the accuracy of sections of Call of the Wild.
Purpose:
To evaluate literature
To emphasize the importance of communication in all species
To combine science with literature
Objectives (Learner Outcomes):
Students will be able to (1) identify types of wolf communication and (2) analyze interactions between Buck and the wolves to evaluate the accuracy of Jack London's portrayal of wolves.
Resources:
"Wolf Talk" handout
"Talkin' Wolf" handout
Call of the Wild - Understanding Literature textbook (Glencoe/McGraw-Hill)
Activities and Procedures:
Students will have read Call of the Wild (focusing on sections where Buck encounters the wolves, joins the pack, and takes charge of the pack).
Teacher will lecture briefly on three types of wolf communication-olfaction, body language, and vocalization.
Students will receive handouts on wolf communication. The concepts will be related to the previous unit on speaking skills (focusing on body language).
Teacher will play audio clips of wolf howls and demonstrate wolf howling.
Students will be able to practice howling. (optional)
Students will work in groups of 3-4 to identify and analyze the interactions between Buck, the lone wolf, and the wolf pack.
The class will discuss what types of communication could be occurring in the above situations.
Extensions:
Students could observe a different kind of animal and compare its communication to that of the wolves.
Students could rewrite sections of the novel to include factual details about how Buck and the wolves would communicate.
Closures-Tying it all together with real-world application:
The class will review body language's importance in communication. Briefly discuss styles of writing and the importance of including accurate facts in literature (or why writers sometimes choose to ignore the facts).
Assessment Strategies:
Teacher will informally evaluate student responses during discussion.
