ED 5602: Island Hopping Across the Curriculum, Practicum, Fall 2001
Overview
During an intensive one-week experience, K-12 educators will visit Lake Michigan's islands in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore that have abundant learning opportunities in cultural and natural resources. Following an introductory session on Monday in Empire, Michigan, teachers will participate in a field-based camping adventure with experienced naturalists and scientists teachers will explore bird migrations, island biogeography, small mammals and insects, atmosphere and weather, mathematics in nature, journal writing, geography, and history of the island. This experience prepares teachers to help students understand how we investigate and learn about our world; explore what constitutes knowledge about our world and scientific theories of adaptation; investigate the interrelationships of living things in ecosystems; understand how matter and energy are recycled in our world; observe the geosphere, the hydrosphere, atmosphere, and weather; explore data analysis, statistics, patterns and relationships; understand human/environment interactions; and strengthen language arts skills in literature, genre and craft of language, ideas in action, inquiry and research. Using this experience as a resource, teachers create a teaching unit for implementation in their classrooms in the fall.
