This six-day workshop is designed to help teachers improve their ability
to teach students the fundamentals of astronomy, geology, and physics.
This course focuses on effective approaches to teaching such concepts as
laws of motion, scientific theories of the origin of the solar system, the
interpretation of scientific data, and critical thinking about evidence in
support of decision making. The Institute will draw upon the substantial
scientific expertise of faculty at Michigan Technological University,
utilizing its laboratory, classroom facilities, and computing capabilities;
and upon the experience and insights of the participants and their understanding
of the learning needs and skills of K-12 students.
Cost:
$2400, covers tuition, lodging, meals, and instructional materials for
the full week. Fellowships: Michigan teachers are eligible for fellowships
from the Michigan Improving Teacher Quality Grant Program, which
cover all Institute fees for Michigan teachers except for a registration fee
of $400.
