Program Requirements/Admissions Criteria

Enrollment is limited. Applications are reviewed by the MS-ASE Coordinating Committee of the Michigan Tech Department of Cognitive and Learning Sciences on a competitive basis. Applicants are selected based on the following criteria. The applicant must

  • be the recipient of a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution;
  • possess secondary teacher certification;
  • have at least one year of secondary teaching experience;
  • be adequately prepared for advanced study in the chosen field of specialization as demonstrated by the undergraduate program of study and the scholastic record;
  • be recommended for admission by the chair of the Michigan Tech Department of Cognitive and Learning Sciences.
  • Upon receipt of your initial letter of inquiry, an application packet will be sent to you, including the following information:
    • an application form
    • three forms for letters of recommendation
    • additional program information

ENG 5100 The Engineering Process 4 credits
equivalent to ENG5101 (2 cr.) + ENG5102 (2 cr.)
ENG 5200 Engineering Applications in the Physical Sciences 4 credits
  equivalent to ENG5201 (2 cr.) + ENG5202 (2 cr.)
ENG 5300 Engineering Applications in the Earth Sciences 4 credits
  equivalent to ENG5301 (2 cr.) + ENG5302 (2 cr.)
Industry or Research Internship 3-6 credits
ENG 5900 Internship 3-6 credits
Graduate Research Paper 2 credits
ED 5900 Graduate Research in Education 2 credits
Approved Applied Science or Science Education Electives* 4-7 credits
*Michigan Tech summer professional development courses can be applied as electives. This includes, for example, the Educator's Science & Mathematics Institute Series (ESMIS), Geology of Utah Institute, and the Earth Science Institutes.
