Explore the terrestrial and aquatic ecology of Isle Royale in-depth through field methods, wilderness immersion, and paddling the park’s waterways. 3 cr. ED 5640

This field-based course set in the wilderness backcountry of Isle Royale National Park builds on the materials covered in the Ecology of Isle Royale course, ED 5560. This course involves a more in-depth examination of aquatic and terrestrial ecology and requires a solid foundation in wilderness skills and ethics. Paddle through the wilderness exploring diverse aquatic habitats, including Lake Superior and inland lakes. Hike inland to study streams, ponds, wetlands, ridges and forests. Hone your senses to observe the world around you and expand your skill of identifying native and non-native species to aid in uncovering the interactions between organisms. Group discussions will help you to bring your experiences to your classroom by forming links between Isle Royale and your home communities and sharing ideas for lesson plans, class projects, and creative teaching.

Isle Royale AntlersThis course focuses on participant involvement with group discussions and team and individual activities. It includes unique opportunities to visit with researchers and collect field data to contribute to the park’s natural resources monitoring projects. The instructor is an educator with extensive wilderness and natural history experience at Isle Royale. This course culminates in the creation of lesson plans applying your experiences on Isle Royale to classroom teaching, to be submitted after completion of the trip. The course begins and ends in Copper Harbor, MI.

Cost: $500. The cost covers tuition and fees, course materials, transportation from Copper Harbor (Michigan) to Isle Royale, six days of food, and some camping equipment. Prerequisite, ED 5560, or permission of instructor. Limited to 9 participants.
