Vision and Philosophy

We are the only Master's International program in science education in the country

Our Vision

Light Bulbs in ClassTraining of science teachers is a critical activity in both developing countries and the United States. There is a clear recognition that science education is key to economic prosperity in all countries. An understanding of the theory and practice of science is essential for everyone, not only those entering technical fields.

Effective science educators must be proficient in a field of science as well as in educational theory. Furthermore, with increased global mobility both students and teachers benefit from the opportunity to work with people from diverse cultures. The Master's International Program in Applied Science Education at Michigan Technological University will benefit students and teachers in host countries and in the United States.

Our Educational Philosophy

Winter EcologyMichigan Tech is an established leader in science education. Certification is available for students with a Bachelor's degree in eight different fields of specialization—Applied Ecology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics. Each student is required to obtain an academic major and minor in a scientific field of study. The program provides pre-service teachers with a wide range of real-world, practical classroom experiences that prepare them for effective practice in diverse classrooms.

The graduate program is designed to meet the needs of teachers who desire to improve their knowledge and application of science in the classroom. The program combines courses taught by engineering, science, and education faculty with a strong emphasis on innovative practice grounded in teacher reflection and research, as well as national and state education standards.
