Timeline

Timeline

Students will spend ten months (September through June) on campus at Michigan Tech before beginning Peace Corps service. Thus, students will be available for overseas departure in July-August. In addition to their coursework, students will have opportunities to meet with other MI students as well as returning Peace Corps volunteers while on campus. During the spring term, before they begin their service in the field, MI students will enroll in an MTU course (FW5770) specifically designed to prepare Peace Corps volunteers for international work in developing regions.

For each semester of Peace Corps service students will be enrolled in ED5921, International Teaching Internship, (1 credit) or ED5994, International Science Education Practicum (1 credit). Tuition for students in the field will be paid by MTU and no additional fees will be charged. Academic requirements during the service period are very flexible and will be based on appropriate activities for the service site. Students will document their experience in science education, including inquiry-based education, action learning, and related relevant topics. Appropriate research topics might include "action learning and research in a secondary school in country x," "inquiry-based science teaching in country x," " challenges to improving science instruction in country x," etc.

On their return from Peace Corps service students will submit and orally present their report. In some cases a video-conference presentation may be arranged. Students wishing to obtain Michigan certification in secondary science teaching may remain on campus to complete any course requirements imposed by the state.

Students who are unable to complete the Peace Corps experience for any reason may continue in the master's program and complete a degree on the standard path to degree.
