Teacher Certification - Student Teaching

Last modified August 13, 2007.

Approval for Student Teaching (ED4900) may only be granted when the following conditions are met:

  • Teacher education portfolio submitted by Friday of the second week of the previous semester. (Applications submitted after those dates will not be accepted.)
  • Completion of all required Division of Teacher Education courses with a GPA of 2.5. Departmental approval is required prior to registration for all Education courses. Please see Department Secretary.
  • GPA (Major, Minor and overall) of 2.5 for Math, Science & English or 2.75 for Social Studies, Business & Economics.
  • A passing score on the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Basic Skills portion (registration booklets are available in the Division of Teacher Education Office).
  • Approval by the Education faculty committee, indicating that the committee recognizes that the candidate is academically, pedagogically, and socially prepared for student teaching.

Students are not permitted to make their own student teaching placements. The University cannot guarantee that individuals will be placed in schools of their choice. In addition, students may have to be placed in locations that will require living away from the MTU campus.

Because of the commitment made by school districts and cooperating teachers, and because of the costs associated with placing student teachers, if a student applies and accepts a placement for student teaching and subsequently withdraws (either before or during student teaching) that student will not be placed in student teaching for one calendar year. It is critical that a student who applies for student teaching that they accept the professional responsibility associated with student teaching. School districts make professional commitments to students and the expectation is that students will act in a professionally responsible manner. Appeals to this rule are rarely granted, but may be made in writing to the Chair of the Division of Teacher Education.

Division of Teacher Education policy is not to permit students teachers to take additional classes or work during their student teaching internship. The policy also means no student internship jobs during your student teaching. Any variation from this policy must be approved 6 weeks in advance by the Division of Teacher Education.

Full details on student teaching are available in the Student Teaching Handbook.
