Descriptive Title: Examining Differences in Wolf Skulls
Overview: After being exposed to general information related to wolves, students will examine wolf skull features and attempt to discover why features differ between wolf types.
Purpose: Students should be able to suggest why the various wolf types have developed different skull features and how each of those differences have been beneficial for each type of animals survival.
Objectives (Learner Outcomes): Students will gain knowledge related to wolves, which will foster growth in children's education related to the following benchmarks:
R1, R13, L09, LE2, LE3, LEC1, LEC6, LEC7
Resources/Materials:
Background knowledge on food web/chains; wolf behavior and physical features.
"Real-size" wolf skull, pictured (front and side view) on Xerox sheets.
Activities and Procedures:
The background knowledge provided on wolves for/with children will be "age appropriate and may involve literature videos, activities and/or Internet information. After obtaining this general knowledge, the students will do the specific activity on "Wolf Skulls".
Procedure:
Pass out sheets containing "real size" wolf skulls and centimeter rulers.
(Students should work in small groups)
Students should find at least 5 differences in the skulls.
Students will then describe how each of the differences they have noted assist in that type of wolf's survival.
Students will then share what they have concluded with the rest of their class.
Students will suggest ways the class could verify the accuracy of conclusions they have drawn.
Closure-Tying it all together with real-world application:
Just as wolf differences benefit the survival of that type of animal, so differences in every other living thing benefits that organisms survival.
Assessment Strategies:
Scoring rubic
5 points - 5 differences noted with reasons why each difference aids in survival
4 points - 4 differences noted with reasons why each difference aids in survival
3 points - 3 differences noted with reasons why each difference aids in survival
2 points - 2 differences noted with reasons why each difference aids in survival
1 point -- 1 difference noted with reason why difference aids in survival
