Wolf communication within packs
Creative Descriptive Title:
Wolf Talk
Purpose (why you are teaching this particular unit):
To educate students on the various methods of wolf communication and why it's important
Overview of Content:
Discussing types of wolf communication and seasons especially related to hunting and the necessity of working together to succeed.
Estimated Time Commitment:
45 minutes.
Learner Expectations (Desired Results):
TLW understand wolves have three main communication forms.
TLW recognize importance of communication in wolf packs.
TLW learn to and demonstrate different modes of wolf communication.
Activities and Procedures:
Briefly explain three main communication forms: 1. vocal 2. physical (body language) 3. Olfactory.
- Explain importance of clear communication. Have students, without talking, line up alphabetically by middle name (no written or oral communication).
- Emphasize: wolves may also communicate without vocalizing (i.e. body language/scent).
- Do scent activity using film canisters (from International Wolf Center).
- Emphasize importance of scent communication and recognition, territory, finding prey.
- Show pictures/slides/sketches of various physical behavior and have students guess what they mean (in general): tail position, ear position, body position, students act out scenarios using this body language.
- Finally, explain importance of howls, barks, and whimper/whines.
-Show students how to howl, have them “perform.”

-Another book on wolves that I have at home. I don't recall the author's name. Title was probably Wolves.
Closure-Tying it all together with real-world application:
As humans we communicate to better our lives and even to survive. So this is true with wolves.
Performance Assessment Strategies:
Assessment will be ongoing throughout the activities. Also through directed question-answer discussion at the end of the activities.
